Shirley Hughes

Can you imagine growing up without television, dvds, or a computer? When Shirley Hughes was a child in England in the 1930’s, they had only a radio. She and her sisters played, put on dramas, drew pictures, and read books--a good start for becoming an artist and a writer!

She went to art school and began writing and illustrating picture books for her own three children when they were small. Now she has written and illustrated more than 50 picture books. One of her most popular characters is Alfie. Alfie has important triumphs like getting new boots and going to a first birthday party without Mom. Shirley Hughes’ stories are warm, realistic, and show empathy for real childhood experiences. Click here for more info on Shirley Hughes.
